Sligachan is well situated right in the middle of the Isle of Skye, making it a favourite location as a base for travelling around the island. It’s home to the wonderful Sligachan river, and several walking paths that head deep into the Cuillin mountains. The Sligachan Hotel (on the right in the photo) provides rooms, a restaurant and very well stocked bars, though as with everywhere on Skye it’s essential to book well ahead if you want to stay or eat.
The Sligachan Campsite provides a place for some of the many motorhomes, caravans and campers to settle down for the night. It’s open from April through to September and, on this night, it was packed. The showers and electrical hookups are no doubt very attractive for the wandering tourists.
Photographed in mid June, just as the longest day approaches, the sun finally went down at about 10:30pm, to rise again just after 4am. If stays light for some time after sunset, and on this evening after a scorching hot 25C sunfest, it was warm and muggy. The midges were out in force, and I foolishly left my car door open resulting in a bite-ridden drive back home.
A shot from ground level doesn’t do justice to the setting of the site, so I sent the drone up to capture this image looking down Loch Sligachan to the east. Traffic on the usually busy road dropped significantly as sensible people went to bed, and the campsite seemed to be a model of good behaviour with no loud noise or partying happening. A 1-second exposure was needed in the gloom, with the drone doing an admirable job of keeping steady for a sharp and atmospheric shot.
