The weather plays a huge part in the lives of everybody who lives, works or visits the Isle of Skye.
Unpredictable at best, life threateningly atrocious at worst, the weather frequently makes travel very difficult especially in winter.
Often the worst hit are the ferries. There are ferries to the mainland from Armadale and Kylerhea, to the Outer Hebrides from Uig, and numerous other smaller islands like Raasay.
Since the bridge was finished in 1995, it’s possible for people to get on and off the island in all but the worst weather when the bridge itself gets closed.
Here, a sign near Broadford lets everyone know that the Armadale-Mallaig ferry is banjaxed.
