LOCH AIRIGH NA SAORACH
Airigh na Saorach (the sheiling of hardship) is a loch in a collection of 6 known as the Black Lochs. It sits close to the Broadford to Armadale road, though much of it is hidden from view. The old road runs alongside, now a foot/cycle path. Because of the good path, it’s a popular walking spot.
The landscape is more like the “flow country” of Sutherland than the peaks and valleys elsewhere on Skye. The saturated peaty ground is dotted with interlinked watercourses. Water flows slowly and gently between them, and eventually out into the sea near Drumfearn.
Here the lake is illuminated by a full moon reflecting in the surface. The road can be seen just beyond it, and the summit of Sgurr na Coinnich beyond.
